The Necessity of an Integrated Treatment of Diabetes and Depression
The link between diabetes and depression evokes special challenges.
There is a need for higher attention on this fact because:
- Depression can intensify the perception of diabetes symptoms and increase the symptoms (patients feel subjectively worse).
Depression can negatively influence the quality of self-care (lack of energy and despair).
- Depression can significantly increase the negative results of diabetes (amputation of extremities, blindness). 5)
Patient Empowerment to Get Involved
For many patients with diabetes it is difficult to accept the diagnosis ‘depression‘ and to commit to an adequate treatment.
- This is also true when there is an validated diagnosis ‚depression‘ with proved tools like the PHQ-9. 6)
- Often patients with diabetes are less or even not at all aware of their depressive symptoms but more concentrated on their physical symptoms which are often intensified by a depression.
